NB Construction were fortunate enough to undertake major renovation and restoration work on this historic 1918 charmer in the Spaulding Square Historic Preservation Overlay Zone. The house next door was a pied a terre for Hollywood film star and director Charlie Chaplin, and with so much history in the area, it was imperative that work on the home was thoughtfully designed to meet the client’s needs and retain the integrity of the original design.
The top-to-bottom project included a complete rebuild of the English cottage-style rolled roof and chimney, new plumbing, electrical and HVAC, custom-milled doors and windows, and the addition of a contemporary style patio, pool and spa. The original tile fireplace was painstakingly restored, while original woodwork and flooring were refinished throughout the house. In addition to a total kitchen renovation, one bathroom was renovated and another two were added.
One of the greatest achievements was the addition of more than 1,000 square feet of living space, with very little impact on the original look of the home. An attic space was transformed into a beautiful living area loaded with custom wood trim, a full bath, closet, and balcony overlooking the pool. An additional master suite with closet, luxury bath, airy cathedral ceiling and French doors into the yard was constructed by extending a rear wall into the back yard.
By opening up more of the interior space onto a pool and spa area as beautiful to look at as to relax in, this Spaulding Square gem was a unique opportunity to seamlessly blend historic architecture with the hallmarks of the modern West Coast lifestyle!
